Fund Safety Review of the McGroarty Corridor Development
The McGroarty Environmental Review Coalition (MERC) is a community-led group of residents in Sunland, California, formed to ensure that the proposed development along McGroarty Street receives thorough environmental and safety review.
Many residents throughout the area have concerns about emergency access, traffic impacts, wildfire risk, and infrastructure capacity in this hillside community.
With support from community members, MERC has already raised funds to retain Channel Law Group to represent the community’s concerns in the environmental review process.
We are now raising funds for the next critical step: retaining independent experts whose analysis will help ensure that traffic, fire safety, and environmental impacts are fully examined during the review process.
Our goal is to ensure that any development proceeds responsibly, with public safety and environmental considerations fully addressed.
Our Neighborhood Deserves Protection.
You may have heard about the proposed 11-home development along the McGroarty corridor. While it may seem like a localized project, the reality is: What happens here affects all of Sunland.
This development raises serious concerns about fire safety, environmental impact, and infrastructure strain—right in the heart of our neighborhood.
Why We’re Taking Action
This development sits in a sensitive area where decisions about density, safety, and environmental impact carry long-term consequences for our entire community. While the current proposal includes 11 homes, projects like this can expand over time, and there is no guarantee that the density won’t increase in the future. With the real possibility for ADU construction, the overall number of structures could be much higher — potentially even doubling.
We support responsible development—but this proposal raises serious concerns.

Fire Safety Risks
Development in high-risk fire zones without adequate safeguards puts lives and property at risk. The Project is located within a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.

Environmental Impact
Hillside disruption, habitat loss, and runoff could permanently affect the surrounding ecosystem.
Infrastructure & Traffic
Increased congestion along Foothill Blvd. and strain on already limited infrastructure.
Accountability & Process
We believe the City must follow proper review procedures—not fast-track projects that impact community safety and quality of life.
What We’ve Accomplished To Date
In just a short time, Sunland residents have come together to make real progress:
Raised $5,000 to retain Channel Law Group who believes we have a strong, winnable case
Formed MERC (McGroarty Environmental Review Coalition)
Filed an appeal with the City (see Channel Law Group page)
Raised $5,000 toward a critical engineering expert
Begun the process of hiring additional independent experts, including:
Biologist (upcoming if funds are raised)
Environmental expert (upcoming if funds are raised)
We’re building momentum but we need more concerned citizens to keep it going.
Help Us Meet Our Remaining Goal: $10,500
If just 105 households contribute $100, we can fully fund this effort.
